Drinking spearmint tea regularly may help some women combat unwanted hair growth on the face and body, according to a new study from Turkey. Researchers found that women who drank a cup of the herbal tea twice a day significantly reduced their levels of free testosterone, a common cause of excessive hair growth (hirsutism) on the face, breasts, and other areas of the body.
Treatment of hirsutism typically involves the use of drugs that affect the production of, or response to, male sex hormones in a woman’s body. It appears that spearmint tea may provide a much safer, more natural treatment option for many women suffering from excess hair growth and the distress and embarrassment it causes.
According to study leader Professor Mehmet Numan Tamer:
“This study shows that spearmint could be a good natural alternative for women who have mild symptoms.”
By the way, in the study the researchers made the tea by pouring a cup of boiling water over one heaped teaspoon (5 grams) of dried spearmint leaves, and leaving it for 5 to 10 minutes before drinking.
