DCA: A cheap, safe, effective “cure” for cancer?

Update (2/15/07) - We’ve created a new post specifically for information about obtaining DCA, either by buying it or by taking part in a clinical study. Please click here if that’s what you’re interested in.

———-

The molecule dichloroacetate — DCA for short — appears to be able to kill cancer cells by changing the way they make their energy, according to new research from Canada. In an experiment at the University of Alberta researchers found that DCA was able to kill lung, breast, and brain cancer cells while leaving normal, healthy cells unharmed.

The results were pretty amazing, to say the least. But it gets better. DCA, which has already been used for years to treat certain metabolic disorders, has the following benefits:

It’s inexpensive — No corporation owns a patent for the DCA molecule so it can be manufactured much more cheaply than “typical” cancer drugs.

It’s safe — After years of use in the treatment of other diseases, researchers already know that DCA is a relatively safe, chemical. It appears to target cancer cells only, so it doesn’t cause damage to healthy cells like most cancer drugs do. (Update: High doses of DCA apparently do cause some negative side-effects, including toxic neuropathy.)

It’s small – DCA is a very small molecule that is easily absorbed in the body when taken orally. Unlike many other drugs, it can pass through the blood-brain barrier, making it possible to treat brain cancers.

It might treat all cancers — DCA alters a fundamental metabolic process that occurs in all forms of cancer cells, therefore it may be able to treat most, if not all, types of cancer.

So is dichloroacetate the “cure” for cancer that we’ve waited for for so long? Only time will tell. Hopefully its lack of a patent (and high profit margins) won’t cause it to be swept aside by major research organizations and investors!

———-

From the University of Alberta:

Small molecule offers big hope against cancer

DCA is an odourless, colourless, inexpensive, relatively non-toxic, small molecule. And researchers at the University of Alberta believe it may soon be used as an effective treatment for many forms of cancer.

Dr. Evangelos Michelakis, a professor at the U of A Department of Medicine, has shown that dichloroacetate (DCA) causes regression in several cancers, including lung, breast, and brain tumors.

Michelakis and his colleagues, including post-doctoral fellow Dr. Sebastian Bonnet, have published the results of their research in the journal Cancer Cell.

Scientists and doctors have used DCA for decades to treat children with inborn errors of metabolism due to mitochondrial diseases. Mitochondria, the energy producing units in cells, have been connected with cancer since the 1930s, when researchers first noticed that these organelles dysfunction when cancer is present.

Until recently, researchers believed that cancer-affected mitochondria are permanently damaged and that this damage is the result, not the cause, of the cancer. But Michelakis questioned this belief and began testing DCA, which activates a critical mitochondrial enzyme, as a way to “revive” cancer-affected mitochondria.

The results astounded him.

Michelakis and his colleagues found that DCA normalized the mitochondrial function in many cancers, showing that their function was actively suppressed by the cancer but was not permanently damaged by it.

More importantly, they found that the normalization of mitochondrial function resulted in a significant decrease in tumor growth both in test tubes and in animal models. Also, they noted that DCA, unlike most currently used chemotherapies, did not have any effects on normal, non-cancerous tissues.

“I think DCA can be selective for cancer because it attacks a fundamental process in cancer development that is unique to cancer cells,” Michelakis said. “Cancer cells actively suppress their mitochondria, which alters their metabolism, and this appears to offer cancer cells a significant advantage in growth compared to normal cells, as well as protection from many standard chemotherapies. Because mitochondria regulate cell death–or apoptosis–cancer cells can thus achieve resistance to apoptosis, and this appears to be reversed by DCA.”

“One of the really exciting things about this compound is that it might be able to treat many different forms of cancer, because all forms of cancer suppress mitochondrial function; in fact, this is why most cancers can be detected by tests like PET (positron emission tomography), which detects the unique metabolic profile of cancer compared to normal cells,” added Michelakis, the Canada Research Chair in Pulmonary Hypertension.

Another encouraging thing about DCA is that, being so small, it is easily absorbed in the body, and, after oral intake, it can reach areas in the body that other drugs cannot, making it possible to treat brain cancers, for example.

Also, because DCA has been used in both healthy people and sick patients with mitochondrial diseases, researchers already know that it is a relatively non-toxic molecule that can be immediately tested in patients with cancer.

Furthermore, the DCA compound is not patented and not owned by any pharmaceutical company, and, therefore, would likely be an inexpensive drug to administer, Michelakis added.

However, as DCA is not patented, Michelakis is concerned that it may be difficult to find funding from private investors to test DCA in clinical trials. He is grateful for the support he has already received from publicly funded agencies, such as the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), and he is hopeful such support will continue and allow him to conduct clinical trials of DCA on cancer patients.

“This preliminary research is encouraging and offers hope to thousands of Canadians and all those around the world who are afflicted by cancer, as it accelerates our understanding of and action around targeted cancer treatments,” said Dr. Philip Branton, Scientic Director of the CIHR Institute of Cancer.

Update (1/25/07)

Newsweek just published a new article on DCA:

A New Way to Fight Cancer?

One quote I found very interesting:

“DCA is a remarkably simple molecule related to acetic acid, better known as vinegar.”

If anyone finds other good articles about dichloroacetate/DCA, please post links to them in the comments area below. Thanks!

I think they are onto somethig here. the billions spent on research and it is in our backyard. I have cancer, can anybody cook up a batch?
Seriously though, the US govt should offer a billion dollar prize
to the first pharmaceutical company that gets it through FDA trials
and give them exclusive right of manufacture at a reasonable controlled price..

If we can spend billions fighting wars that means nothing, we can spend that much curing the world. They/we owe it to the world.

For cancer tumors…a TV show about 15 years ago, reported a 99% cure rate by mixing superglue with radium, then gluing it onto the tumor…within a month, the tumor dies and all traces of it and the radioactive material are gone…the cancer does not come back. It has been used for ‘inoperable’ brain tumors and other tumors in the body. This does not work for systemic cancers such as leukemia.

If this drug, dichloroacetate (DCA), has already been used for years to treat rare metabolic disorders and so is known to be relatively safe why shouldn’t you beable to just ask your doctor for a prescription. It is worth a try.

  14. 14 Macy Feb 6th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

Doses of 25 mg/kg/day dichloroacetate are typical for pyruvate intervention, but hepatic and nerve toxicity is possible.

These are the amounts typically given to patients, but I personally think you are better off being monitored by a doctor if you are going to try this.

If your current doctor doesn’t want to give you a presciption go to another one, and keep going until you find someone that is at least willing to try. I know if I had cancer I would do that.

My sincerest wishes that this is a real cure for all of you suffering from this horrible disease.

I do not believe DCA is made in Canada or USA but some pharmacies may have it in stock as it is a drug presently being used for treatment.

Be advised I think DCA should be mixed with neutralizers before consumption. I do not know if water dilution would work by it self but I doubt it. Was reading some of the PDF files on tests done on rats an all used DCA with neutralizers being added to their drinking water.

What we need is a doctor to come out and give us the recipe.

I also have cancer which most likely will show up again in a year or so. I will be taking DCA if this happens.

I have no doubt in my mind that there will many more personal trials happening before a full clinicals start. The cat is out of the bag, it’s too easy to do (if we find DCA) and there are a lot of people in immediate need of help.

    Mark.

Dichloroacetate (DCA) has only been tested in cell culture and rats. That does not mean the results will translate to humans. There have been many therapies that were promising in vitro and in animal models that didn’t work in humans. Additionally, the NewScientist article, where this story originated, failed to point out a number of issues, including published data that DCA (1) is carcinogenic in rodent models, (2) can cause hepatotoxicity and (3) can cause peripheral nerve toxicity in humans. The question is will DCA successfully work in cancer patients?

  25. 25 Christopher Amos Feb 12th, 2007 at 11:09 am

I found Sodium DCA, 98% and bought it through a USA distributor. It was back ordered until March, but I ordered it anyway. It was an American Company and was able to order it over the phone, right away.

NOW, I am willing to share this information with anyone but I am looking for people to partner up with in order to try to figure out how DCA is prepared and administered (doseages, etc).

If anyone has any insight into this aspect, feel free to email me at christopheramos@email.com

  26. 26 Toni Feb 12th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

I have located DCA in the UK. However I am waiting to find out if it is the proper dichloroacetate. Apparently there are different kinds. It must contain 2 chlorines, 2 carbon and 2 oxygen.
If it is the correct formulae, I will have it over in about a week if all goes well.

Also there is the problem of dosage. I don’t know what is required. And there are some side affects to it.

I will post on here if I am successfull.

    Toni,

Where did you find the information that “It must contain 2 chlorines, 2 carbon and 2 oxygen.” As indicated in this article by applicant of the Governors of the University of Alberta, Sodium DCA is preferred (which contains NA molecules). These are the very people in Alberta that discovered the DCA treatment for cancer. They are applying for a patent for it, as you can see from this website.

Trichloroacetic acid (also known as trichloroethanoic acid) is an analogue of acetic acid in which the three hydrogen atoms of the methyl group have all been replaced by chlorine atoms.
It is prepared by the reaction of chlorine with acetic acid in the presence of a suitable catalyst.

    CH3COOH + 3Cl2 → CCl3COOH + 3HCl
It is widely used in biochemistry for the precipitation of macromolecules such as proteins, DNA and RNA. Its sodium salt is used as a weedkiller. Solutions containing trichloroacetic acid as an ingredient are used for tattoo removal and the treatment of warts, including genital warts.

Salts of trichloroacetic acid are called trichloroacetates. Reduction of trichloroacetic acid results in dichloroacetic acid, a useful medication that has been shown to have promise for the treatment of cancer

In regards to my other posting, about the USA distributor, that hasn’t exactly panned out. As it turns out, they get their supply from Germany anyway.

The REAL disributors are in China and parts of Europe (mainly Germany and one in Switzerland).

But if I run across anything else, I will make a new posting.

NOTE: Anyone with information about buying or otherwise obtaining DCA should post it here. Thanks!

From the researches at Alberta, they say:

“The invention relates to the use of dichloroacetate and chemical equivalents thereof for the treatment of cancer by inducing apoptosis or reversing apoptosis-resistance in a cell Preferably, the dosage is 10-100 mg/kg”

However, other information out there says that 25 mg/kg causes liver and nerve problems. One study had to end its testing early because of the negative side affects of DCA.

So it doesn’t make sense that up to 100 mg/kg would be safe.

I think we really need to investigate the negative implications of this drug.

If anyone has any information on the negative implications, and whether they are true, please post them.

  32. 32 Toni Feb 15th, 2007 at 5:42 pm

Universtiy of Alberta states that side affects are minimal and the drug has been used for 30-40 years.
They do say that there may be some nerve or liver problems as a side affect.
But which drug does not have a side affect? And we don’t know the percentage that have had side affects. It couold be very miniscule.

I have located the drug in the UK and it is being shipped to me, but I don’t know if it will clear customs.

If any doctor out there could put his input abouat the drug would be appreciated. And yes, I don’t know how or how much to administer of the drug.People are dying. I think they want to take the chance. They have nothing do loss.

I know my relative with cancer will try anything.

If anyone has hada the drug and tried it, please post it on here.

A few observations from an interested MD:

It will be very difficult for doctors in North America to prescribe DCA until there is SOME evidence of efficacy in humans; once that arrives, however, they will be able to prescribe it “off-label” for cancer patients, in the same way that many medications are commonly used for conditions other than the ones they were originally developed for.

If the drug is effective in humans, I suspect we will have some indication within a few months. This could come from several sources. The first would be foreign countries where medicine is less tightly regulated than in North America, where I suspect doctors may already be planning to offer DCA to their patients; given the fact that in many cases they may have nothing else to offer, it would be hard to argue with doing this. I also suspect that clinics in Mexico and other countries which offer non-approved treatments to cancer patients from other countries may start offering DCA very soon: caveat emptor!

It is also clear from this and other websites that many patients are planning to experiment on their own with laboratory-grade DCA. This probably has a better chance of working than other “alternative treatments” such as laetrile and vitamin C that people turn to in their desperation, and again I really couldn’t argue with someone who wanted to do this, if he or she had exhausted all other therapeutic options. However, I would say “BE CAREFUL!”, because it is clear that the substance is toxic if incorrectly administered or taken in greater quantities than have been shown to be safe. A few highly publicized disasters could set the whole field back months and make it harder for others to obtain the medication.

One final note: even in the abscence of any evidence of efficacy in humans, some doctors might consider it ethically acceptable to prescribe pharmaceutical-grade DCA to patients who indicated that they were planning to take laboratory-grade DCA on their own.

  36. 36 Diana, BC Canada Feb 17th, 2007 at 9:16 am

I am in the Dominican Republic, and I saw that they had DHEA over the counter, and I am going to look for DCA here. I have used the chemical equation and other info so if I am lucky, I may find it. There is a Mitochondria website in the USA which treats children for that metobolic disorder. If you have a child, maybe you can try to get into their trials which would be highly controlled and careful. They are looking for subjects.

I agree with the person above who said that they should try this with Canines. Many breeds have different and specific cancers and they can see their pedigree and test co-horts easily. My dog, a Black Flat-coated Retriever, may have Homeclytic Sarcoma a soft tissue cancer.

My mother has end stage NSC Lung Cancer and she did not respond to the Plantinum Treatment and will be going on Taxotere, from the European Yew Needles. It binds the cancer cells and forces them to die.

Though I am going to try, I dont think its so easy to find this stuff even in 3rd world countries. We need a true across-the-board person who can work the system or any system because we are all desparate.

My mom has lung cancer, my best friends sister has terminal breast cancer, and my other friendès grandson has brain cancer. Isnèt that enough to make them let us try it.

If you send me an email, title it with DCA so it doesnèt go into junk email.

Please see my coments on the “Getting DCA” post mentioned at the top.

  43. 43 alex Feb 20th, 2007 at 3:18 am

Regarding dosage, no one knows what dose might be effective in humans with cancer. For Mitochondrial diseases in children I have seen references to a dosage of 25 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

Anyone who decides to take this stuff should be aware that in its pure form it is corrosive. I don’t know how to make it safe, but diluting it in a large amount of water would probably work.

Also consider the following: it may ultimately cause liver tumors, and it has the potential to harm the kidneys and the nervous system. And if it does have a beneficial effect in humans, no one knows how long that effect will last, as cancers have shown an incredible ability to adapt to therapies.

Having said all that I will not join the rest of the medical profession in telling people absolutely not to try it, because I believe that terminally ill individuals have a right to try anything they want, and DCA probably has a better chance of doing at least something than laetrile, vitamins, or Chinese herbs. Even if it didn’t do anything for some people except give them some reason for hope in their last weeks or months, that would be something.

  44. 44 Toni Feb 20th, 2007 at 7:22 am

Alex, you are an MD I understand. I have DCA here now. My sister in law has been given 2 weeks. If I may ask you, the 25 mg/kg that you say was given to chidren, was this once a day or more.
Most of the material I read says it is relitavely a safe chemical with few side affects and then I read horror stories about it.

Why is it no doctore will come out and give pertinent info on this product. It has been used before. Why is it such a mystery. I am going to give it to my sister in law. She wants to take the chance, but i don’t know how much water to mix it with.

    Toni,

What DCA do you have? Sodium dichloroacetate(powder) or Dichloroacetic acid(Liquid)? If its the liquid form, this is very acidic and has to be neutralized and them mixed with water. I do not know the mg/kg to be used. I just know the DCA Acid will burn from the throat to the intestines if not mixed correctly.

For Sodium DCA I suggest the DCA Site Forum: http://www.thedcasite.com/

There are a few people taking it there and giving the dosages. Click on the Chat Room.

  48. 48 D GILMOUR, PHD Feb 23rd, 2007 at 6:33 pm

One aspect of DCA which has not been given coverage is the very low molecular weight of this substance. So low it can be easily combined with 70% dimethylsulfoxide and used as a topical for most cancers. There are “Those” who will be very opposed to DMSO/DCA treatment. Should solve the problem with liver toxicity.

  49. 49 Mark Feb 24th, 2007 at 4:01 am

    D GILMOUR,

70% dimethylsulfoxide and 30% Dichloroacetic acid? How would this be applied, just rub it on the skin? Or does this have to be used like a Nicotine Patch?

  50. 50 alex Feb 24th, 2007 at 7:20 am

Toni, there are 2 reasons that doctors are unable to provide the information that you are seeking. One is that very few have ever prescribed oral DCA, since it is only used for rare metabolic diseases treated by superspecialists. The other is that we really don’t have the knowledge to tell you how to turn the pure DCA used in laboratories into something safe for human usage. All I know is that the drug used in humans is the sodium salt of dichloroacetic acid, which is referred to as sodium dichloroacetate. Pure dichloroacetic acid is highly corrosive and would need further preparation to be safe for human consumption. The dcasite website listed above has more information than I personally know. The only thing I can tell you for sure is not to give pure laboratory grade DCA to anyone because it will cause severe burns.

  51. 51 Toni Feb 26th, 2007 at 12:07 pm

    Alex:

I have started to give sodium dichloroacetate to my sister. It is pharmaceutical DCA. She is taking 250 mg 2 times a day. After the second day she has had body aches all over her.
I heard that this is one of the side affects. Is taht true?

If so is there anything I can give her to combat the pains.
If you can help? Or if anyone has any into on this problem.

Resveratrol is known to act in a similar fasion to DCA in that the molecule is small enough to enter the cancer cell as well. Wikipedia has information tht is helpful.

The wine to get would be from North Carolina, where the grapes are best grown (muscadele or something)

I’ve been looking for some kind of info on the use of DCA to get rid of cancer. Finally I found this one.
Hey! I have a friend that’s in charge of a huge cardiac unit in Berlin. Now I know that DCA is not currently being used for cardiac patients, but he does talk to other people in his line of work.
I will be contacting him and when I find out what he has to say about the tests the German medical association is doing with DCA and cancer, I’ll let all of you know.
He may have some info on where it’s being tested and if they have need of people to try the cure.
Good health and answers for all, Jean

After researching channels for purchasing DCA for veterinary purposes, I came across the now-functioning:

    http://www.buydca.com

I am not a chemist or doctor, so I am not sure if this form is appropriate for humans. It is sodium dichloroacetate derived from the acid. My dog has mediastinal lymphoma, and I am considering trying it.

Has anyone purchased DCA from this manufacturer?

  58. 58 Jean Mar 12th, 2007 at 2:28 pm

I am wondering if Toni’s sister is doing well after her DCA dose.
Alix, If you are a Doctor, would you please contact me at chrjea@yahoo.com? I’d like to talk to you about your take in all this.

My sister in law has been on DCA now for about 2-1/2 weeks. Is there a doctor out there that can give me his opion only if taking carbohydrates causes the cancer to be more aggresive or if it does not matter at all.

I posted in the supplier section but I order my DCA for my cat labeled at “Vet-DCA” from www.buydca.com

    >

The larger bottle should cost a 150 lb. organism (human? :P ) about 63 cents a day according to their calculations. It is legal to sell this labeled for vet use. I hope this helps someone as far as finding a supplier.

  61. 61 Amy Mar 16th, 2007 at 6:54 am

    the website says this:

BuyDCA.com DCA is pharmaceutical grade, 99 plus percent pure sodium dichloroacetate. There are no solvents of any kind used in making BuyDCA.com’s DCA products.

It was omitted from my previous post.

    Hi All!

I have been with out a phone line for over two months due to the storms knocking down trees on my property.
I was wondering if anyone out there has used DCA for Colon cancer?
While my nine pound tumor was entirely removed last November, ( it was incased between layers two and three in my colon, no cancer in the 20 lymph nodes removed ) I would like to ‘ clean up ‘ anything that might be floating around my system.
I bought my DCA and while my personal physician said OK, he feels he doesn’t know anything about it, so he can’t monitor my condition while taking it.
I’ve worked out just how much I need to consume per day, in water. I have the product. I have read up about the side effects. I will keep a journal from day one.
Any doctors out there that live near Washington State or British Columbia that are interested?
    Jean

    Hello Jean and Toni,
I’m very interested how you, Jean, and how Toni’s sister in law are doing, using DCA. My father has long cancer and his condition is going worse very quickly. I’m very interested in DCA. I’m from the Netherlands. Does anybody know where I can buy it in Europe of maybe even in the Netherlands?
    Thanks, Danielle

    http://buydca.com/store/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=Pet-DCA20

It’s now for sale again. Grouppekurosawa.com has a full regimen protocol using DCA and Methyl Jasmonate, but if DCA and caffiene work alone, tell everyone! The MJ is allegedly great to stop blood cancers.

I do pray this is it.

    Kathy
