Aspirin might help prevent asthma development in adults

Taking aspirin every day may help reduce the risk of “new-onset” asthma in adults, according to a new study from the US. However, doctors warned that more research needs to be done before recommending that anyone take aspirin solely for asthma-prevention. Also, they noted that there is no evidence that aspirin helps people who already have asthma and may, in fact, actually cause serious problems in certain individuals.

Researchers found that people who took aspirin were 22% less likely to develop asthma than those who didn’t take the common painkiller. Analysis showed that the risk reduction was greater among people who had never smoked and among those who were 46 years old or older.

As with other diseases that it seems to help prevent, aspirin’s ability to fight inflammation in the body may be the reason for its apparent effects on adult asthma development. There are, however, healthier and safer ways to fight inflammation and protect your health without drugs (such as eating several servings of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains and drinking several cups of green tea every day).
