Women: Get more sleep, gain less weight

Women who get more sleep tend to put on less weight during middle-age, according to a recent study from Case Western Reserve University. Researchers found that women who normally get 5 hours of sleep per night were a third more likely to have a substantial weight gain (33 or more pounds) than women who typically slept for 7 hours.

Why is this? One theory, supported by other research, is that a lack of sleep alters hormones that control metabolism, as well as appetite. Another theory is that people who sleep less are simply too tired to exercise often enough. Most likely, it’s a combination of these and possibly other factors.

This research adds to a growing body of evidence that too little sleep can lead to a wide array of health problems.

The bottom line: Take the necessary steps to get more sleep (7+ hours) and improve your chances of avoiding weight gain and obesity as you age.
