High-sugar soft drinks are helping to make people fat, according to a report recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers say that an extra can of soda per day can make you gain 15 pounds in a year and that this sort of increased consumption is a key factor behind the growing obesity problem in the US.
Experts from the Harvard School of Public Health say that, over the past 40 years, Americans have gotten fatter as soft drink consumption has increased. About a third of all carbohydrate calories in the typical American diet come from added sugars, and soft drinks account for about a half of this amount, according to the new report.
It has become increasingly obvious that one of the best things you can do to avoid weight gain, diabetes, and other health problems is to eliminate high-sugar soft drinks from your diet (or at least limit them greatly). If you must have “sweet” beverages try fresh fruit juices (no sugar added) or teas sweetened with healthier sugar alternatives like stevia and xylitol. Also, do everything you can to help your children avoid sodas and sugary drinks and to make healthier beverage choices.
