The type of bacteria you have in your gut may determine whether or not you become obese, at least accoring to a new study from Washington University. It appears that certain varieties of intestinal bacteria are more effective than others at “processing” food and turning it into energy. Researchers believe that changing the mix of bacteria in your gut may be able to help you lose weight, as well as maintain a healthy weight over the long term.
Although they’re not yet sure which bacteria are optimal, it’s probably a good idea to use a good probiotic supplement and/or eat “live and active culture” yogurt and kefir.
