Study: Potassium-fortified salt may help prevent heart attacks and strokes

Using potassium-enriched salt in place of regular salt may help to lower your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. New research from Taiwan suggests that using a salt-alternative consisting of half sodium chloride and half potassium chloride can decrease an older adult’s chances of dying from heart disease or stroke by 40%.

This news highlights the importance of increasing potassium intake and lowering sodium intake, especially for older adults. Besides adding potassium-fortified salt to your diet, you can probably get the same benefits by eating more potassium-rich foods — like nuts, seeds, bananas, raisins, melons, wheat bran, beans, and potatoes — and fewer high-sodium foods.

Note: You can already find heart-healthy “sodium-potassium salt” at many health food stores, some major grocery chains, and several online retailers’ web sites.
